The Bird Hide: A Japanese-Inspired Residential Interior Design

Creating a Tranquil Retreat with Stunning Views

It is rare to have a unit with a pleasant view in Hong Kong. How can this view be used well as a home characteristic? The residential unit situated in the Southern District is designed by T.B.C. Studio. The design was inspired by the green landscape view outside the window. With a lot of warm wood colors used in the house, and a row of cabinets specially ordered in the living room by the window, the owner can sit comfortably by the window and enjoy the beautiful scenery, feeling like being in a bird-watching house.

The Bird Hide, designed by Tommy Hui, is a unique residential interior design that combines Japanese aesthetics with functionality. The design focuses on creating a tranquil retreat with stunning views, allowing residents to connect with nature while enjoying the comforts of home.

One of the standout features of The Bird Hide is the row of sitting cabinets by the window in the living room. This design element not only provides a comfortable seating area but also allows residents to fully immerse themselves in the surrounding scenery. By removing the original partition wall between the living room and the kitchen and replacing it with a glass wall, the designer has successfully opened up the space, allowing natural light to flow through and expanding the view of the living room.

The use of warm wood colors throughout the house adds to the natural and serene atmosphere. The walls and cabinets in the living room are covered with veneer, complementing the wooden blinds and the natural hill scenery outside the windows. In the lobby, solid wood furniture such as dining tables, dining chairs, and storage shelves further enhances the Japanese-inspired aesthetic, adding a touch of nature through the texture of wood.

The Bird Hide also takes into consideration the personal interests and hobbies of the residents. The master room features a long table specifically designed for the female head of the household, providing ample space for her to work on her handmade ornaments. Adjacent to the long table, a set of decorative cabinets displays her creations, adding a personal touch to the room.

Constructed over a period of 4-5 months, The Bird Hide showcases the seamless integration of design and functionality. By utilizing the natural surroundings and incorporating Japanese design elements, Tommy Hui has created a space that not only provides a peaceful sanctuary but also enhances the overall well-being of the residents.

The Bird Hide was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade recognizes the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the design, which authentically incorporates experience and resourcefulness. The design exemplifies the best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
